Nothing lasts forever, especially faithful cars. This one met its end at approximately 8:25 a.m. Tuesday, October 4, 2005 while it was dutifully hustling me to work -- minding its own business, doing its job, only to get brutally bashed from behind by a Mazda whose driver was perhaps not entirely awake. I'm much less sad about the expense of a new car than I am about the loss of this one. I think it was the best car I ever had. Then again, I still have a broken-down Corolla that's been parked in the yard for going on three years. I can get extremely sentimental about huge machinery.

I bought it used for very little -- $4,500 or so -- and it only had about 45,000 miles on it, maybe less. I pushed it through another 100,000, mostly back and forth to work, occasionally to Tennessee or Charlotte. It never really went anywhere exciting, but only in the last year -- clutch, alternator, fuel pump -- did it fail to deliver. Bless its 30-mpg-on-the-highway heart. Long may it run
