Ian Buruma on R. Crumb. I had no idea The R. Crumb Handbook is brand-new; I know someone who has been carrying it around for awhile and every now and then I look at it and get re-shocked all over again. I have no idea whether Crumb is a great artist or not, only that he's exemplary of one with no censor, no filter, nothing between him and the madness on his pages. If it's in his head he draws it, and doesn't seem to give a thought as to what others will think or how he comes off in it. His art is the art of Here I am, think what you will.
