I'll go ahead and reprint the salient news from this link, so you won't have to click on it: Galatea 2.2 By Richard Powers (Picador $13) -- "A novel about a writer who becomes involved with a bizarre project involving artificial intelligence" is now out in paperback -- and you simply must read it. It's a perfectly heartbreaking story about a man who builds a computer, gives it intelligence and emotion -- and then must destroy it. A beautiful, first-class piece of work. Came out ages ago, why it's only now in paperback, if that's the case, is befuddling.
