Someday I'm going to write a really long post on The Magnetic Fields' 69 Love Songs. It's like some long novel that I hated at first and then grew to love. At first I thought it was the definition of wimpy and lame. It was too Belle and Sebastian-y for me. Somehow I came round, however slowly. I'm still learning to love it, over the course of what seems to be a couple of years now. Just today, for example I listened to the third disc for the first time all the way through. My experience is that the first disc is so incredibly hooky that I want to play it over and over. The next disc: a bit of a drag, and that has mostly kept me from ever hearing the third disc. I've had this suspicion that of the 69 songs, only the first 20 or so are worth listening to. There's great stuff throughout the whole set. It's just this wonderful grab-bag from popmeister Steven Merrit.
