Goodbye, Vickie Lynn

I'm quite saddened to hear of the death of Anna Nicole Smith, a great fragile voluptuous beauty and a genuine American character who could have been fostered in no other country but this one, and who made me smile every time I saw her, which of course was usually in the midst of one torrid imbroglio after another. Her life was one long series of train wrecks involving money, sex, rehab, weight loss, weight gain, any of a number of bizarre public embarrassments, and when someone like that goes, it's like some mini-power failure in celebrity culture. She was pure celebrity; she was made for it. Not just a walking, talking scandal sheet but a veritable billboard of glitz and glamour. There was something almost cartoonish about her, and I think that's what made her so appealing, like Jessica Rabbit come to life, with half the mystery and twice the eroticism. We'll not see her kind again. She'll be missed. God bless her.
